When The State Bank of Hamburg began so also began our long-standing tradition of service to our customers. Many years have passed since those early days, but our bank’s mission has remained steadfast. We hope this glimpse back through our history helps you understand why The State Bank of Hamburg is proud to build on our past to make a better future.
The first records found pertaining to the State Bank of Hamburg were dated December 15, 1892. It was known then as The Farmers and Merchants Bank of Hamburg.
From December 1899 to December 1904, there were no records found because the bank was in the process of receiving its state charter. In 1898, the bank moved into its first new building.
When the bank applied for its charter, the name was changed to The State Bank of Hamburg. At this time all the book work was done by hand and there were no checking accounts as we know them today. The deposits and withdrawals were recorded in a large journal under each customer's name and only showed the balance for the day. The Board of Directors examined the book and reported to the state. It was not until 1933 that the state had bank examiners.
